His House is a 2020 horror thriller film written and directed by Remi Weekes from a story by Felicity Evans and Toby Venables. It stars Wunmi Mosaku, Sope Dirisu and Matt Smith.

It had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 27, 2020. It was released on October 30, 2020, by Netflix.

Bol (Sope Dirisu) and Rial (Wunmi Mosaku) are refugees fleeing with their daughter from war-torn South Sudan. To escape, they first board the packed flatbed of a pickup truck, then brave storm-torn waters on an overcrowded motorboat. Both witness Africans traversing the dangerous open sea in search of a better life in Europe, only to be plunged into a watery grave. Though they survive the treacherous crossing, their daughter and many others do not. When they’re finally granted probational asylum in Britain, three months later, the government assigns them a shabby house on the outskirts of London. And then the ghosts of their past start coming to life.

Bol tries to assimilate. He sings football songs, asks Rial to use utensils rather than her hands when they eat, and even changes how he dresses. Bol wants to prove to the government that he and Rial are among “the good ones.” Rial however, clings to their culture. She retains their daughter’s necklace, dresses in colorful clothes, and rather than using a table, sits on the floor to eat.

Living in the dilapidated house, their probation officer Mark (Matt Smith) offers punishment instead of help, threatening that any complaints about the house might hamper their asylum case. Any attempts to secure new lodgings they are told, will be seen as a violation of Bol and Rian’s refugee status, and could result in deportation.

Rial doesn't take long to work out what the evil in their house is; an apeth,"night witch". She tells Bol the story of a poor man in her village who wanted a home of his own so badly that he started stealing from others, unwittingly stealing from an apeth who lived by the river. When the thief built his home the apeth moved in with him. The walls would whisper the spells of the apeth and ghosts appeared until they consumed the man. Rial believes that an apeth has followed them and if they repay their debt, the apeth will bring Nyagak back to them. It's not immediately clear what "debt" it is that they need to repay, but either way, Bol doesn't believe Rial and thinks it's just a curse.

Bol burns everything they brought with them, but the apeth continues to torment him and things deteriorate between the couple. It even begins to threaten their chances of staying in the UK which would be fine with Rial who tells Bol she wants to leave. Bol refuses and locks Rial in the house before he summons the apeth who calls him a "thief" and tells him that "your life is not yours... you stole it". The apeth offers Bol a deal: "Your life for Nyagak. Take this knife and open your flesh, your body for hers."

The devastating truth about Nyagak is then revealed in a flashback experienced by Rial: Nyagak wasn't their daughter. Following a massacre that she was able to survive by hiding, Rial and Bol attempted to escape from South Sudan, but found that a bus they needed to use was full with space only remaining for children. Bol saw Nyagak and claimed she was their daughter and the couple managed to get on the bus to escape, leaving Nyagak's real mother to die. Later during the sea crossing, Bol and Rial managed to reach a boat for safety, but were unable to save Nyagak who drowned.

Having accepted what they did, Bol decides to repay the debt to the apeth and tells Rial: "Let me save her. I should have tried harder. I should have saved her." Bol starts to let the apeth into his skin and Nyagak returns to Rial, but Rial doesn't accept her and chooses to save Bol instead by killing the apeth.

Later, the couple choose to stay in the house and live with the ghosts of the people they left behind in South Sudan, including Nyagak. The final scene shows Bol telling their case worker Mark, "Your ghosts follow you. They never leave. They live with you. It's when I let them in, I could start to face myself," with Rial adding: "This is our home."
